About Me
My name is Logan Deese and I am a sophomore at the University of South Carolina Lancaster. I am 20 years old and I have lived in Lancaster, SC for my entire life. I graduated from Lancaster High School in 2017 and during my senior year, choosing a college was not very difficult to me. I valued having close relationships with my professors, so I wanted to find a small university with small class sizes. I valued having a family-type of campus atmosphere. Because of this clarity, I knew that USC Lancaster was the perfect fit for me.
Growing up, I always got injured while I played sports. Therefore, I spent a great deal of time doing physical therapy exercises in order to recover from my injuries. I was fascinated by the deep knowledge that my physical therapist had about how the bones, ligaments, muscles, and tendons in our bodies were connected. Being an avid sports fan throughout my life, I would ask my physical therapist about common injuries professional athletes would suffer from, such as a torn anterior cruciate ligament or ruptured Achilles. He had knowledge about how the injury could occur and what the recovery process would be for that type of injury. Being astonished by his knowledge of the recovery process is what inspired me to major in exercise science. My physical therapist uses the knowledge that he has learned throughout his professional career to help people, like myself. By helping and building relationships with others on the University of South Carolina Lancaster, I can use this in my future career. In the future, I plan on receiving my bachelor’s degree in exercise science from the University of South Carolina and attend physical therapy school in order to become a Doctor of Physical Therapy.
My pathway for Graduation with Leadership Distinction is Professional and Civic Engagement. I wanted to get involved in the USCL campus because I wanted to learn more about USCL and meet new people every day. Currently, I am the student assistant in the Office of Academic and Student Affairs, where I serve under our associate dean. I have been involved in other organizations on our campus as well. I am the treasurer for the Student Government Association (SGA), which is an organization that creates student life events for our campus, so that we can encourage other students to become more involved in our campus in order to make it a place where they feel welcomed and supported academically, as well as personally. The SGA has hosted events, such as Spring Fling and a Chinese New Year Celebration. Also, I am a Peer Advisor at Lancaster (PAL), where I help lead new student orientation during the summer. I had the honor and privilege to speak in front of President Pastides and the University of South Carolina Board of Trustees about our PAL program. I decided to pursue GLD because I want to share my experiences with other people, so that I can be an example of how you can get involved in your campus or community. I believe that it’s important to become involved in the community that you live in, so that you can help people. Not only would you be helping others in your community, but you will be growing as an individual, so that you can become even more involved in society and the world that we live in.
