Getting Recognized by Others
Positivity is something we rarely see in today’s culture when you look at a newspaper, watch the news, or scroll through your social media feed. Our society today is more negative than positive, when it should be the complete opposite. Therefore, when you see something, or someone stand out by doing great work, it catches your attention. Not only is it special when you recognize someone doing great work, but it is very special recognizes you for your hard work. For my Speech 140 course, one of our assignments was called a field reporter speech. For this assignment, I went to a location in Lancaster County and filmed myself doing a report, like an eyewitness news account. This sounds like an easy task to accomplish, but this is harder than it looks. I chose to go to USC Lancaster’s baseball field, Doomsday Corner, and report about recent games the Lancers baseball team played. This assignment took about four or five tries before I finally completed it without forgetting or mispronouncing words from my script. After I e-mailed my assignment to my professor, she told me that I did a great job and that I should look into something in the broadcast journalism field. Although I do not plan to go into a career in broadcast journalism, my professor recognized some of my skills in another area of study. I never would of thought that I would have potential in something like broadcast journalism, but she stated that she knew that I worked hard and was very effective in communicating my message. During the summer before my freshman year, I worked in the office of admissions. I applied for the student assistant job, interviewed, and got the position offered to me. My duties were very similar to the ones in my current position in the office of academic and student affairs, but the questions that I had to answer were slightly different. This was my first job without my father being my employer and I worked as hard as I could. One day in March of 2018, our academic dean, Dr. Ron Cox, came into the admissions office and asked me to come into his office. I had no idea what this could possibly be about, so I was extremely nervous. We walked into his office and closed the door and asked me to have a seat. When he sat down, he told me I was not in any trouble, so I was relieved, yet confused as to why I was there. He told me that he recognizes my potential and sees that I am an efficient and hard worker. Then, he offered me the student assistant job in his office. I was surprised because I was offered this position and never applied or interviewed for it. After a few days, I accepted the position and started to work in the office of academic and student affairs. Dr. Cox recognized my potential and it made me realize that my work ethics and values are stronger than I previously thought they were. Being recognized by others is something that inspires you to do other things and gives you confidence. Being recognized by another professor and the academic dean of our campus has been a part of my increase in self-confidence in my abilities. Recently, I had the opportunity to reciprocate the action of recognizing others by awarding the Servant Heart and Teacher of the Year awards as a part of the Student Government Association. I believe that these experiences can help me when I pursue a career in Physical Therapy. When you are a physical therapist, if a patient or co-worker tells you that you are doing a great job, you know that what you’re doing is right. This can motivate you to continue what you are doing, regardless of the circumstances. |
